SpeedBumps vs. bump stops with bump stop extension -
The stock bump stops with bump stop extensions accomplish two things. First, they limit the upward movement of the axle which in turn keeps a larger than stock tire from rubbing the fender. Second, they allow for a longer shock. The bump stop extensions will hit and bottom out, meaning it will experience a sudden stop of movement due reaching the physical limitation of travel, before the longer shock bottoms out. Without the correct bump stop extension, the longer shock would bottom out first.
The TeraFlex SpeedBumps provide the same aspects as the bump stop extensions. They limit upward movement. In addition, the SpeedBumps also capture the rebound energy that is created when the suspension compresses and bottoms out, providing a real advantage over the stock bump stop. A stock bump stop cushions the blow, but does not slow the compression of the axle. The axle then rebounds off the bump stop with a great deal of energy, creating a harsh impact to the vehicle and the driver. The shock then has to control the resulting rebound energy. The SpeedBumps’ design actually slows the axle down. So now when it bottoms out, most of the energy has been removed, reducing stress on the vehicle and driver. This allows the shock to control far less energy, which provides much better control and handling.
SpeedBumps vs. stock bump stops when rock crawling –
Although rock crawling presents a slower and more progressive impact, Jeepers find that SpeedBumps really soften and smooth out the landing coming off a large rock, providing a much less jarring experience. Stock bump stops (extensions) and SpeedBumps will both keep the tires from stuffing too far into the fender, and keep the shocks from compressing and bottoming out first.
SpeedBumps vs. stock bump stops at high speed off road driving –
Here is a situation where the SpeedBump equipped Jeep will shine. High speed off-road driving presents constant high energy impacts to the Jeep’s suspension. A high speed impact to the stock bump stops causes a loss of control. The shock can’t control that much energy. This is also stressful on the Jeep and driver. The Jeep with stock bump stops must reduce its speed dramatically in order to keep the rig under control. The Jeep equipped with SpeedBumps, however, will efficiently maintain its speed and control over the same terrain. The SpeedBumps absorb over 4.5 times the amount of energy as the bump stops, which will reduce the rebound energy created as the jeep bottoms out over obstacles, thus reducing strain on the shocks. This keeps the driver comfortable, the jeep under control, and the trail left with nothing but dust.
